Texture Pack Summary

The Eldritch Horror resource pack by The Craft Stars is a massive and vibrant addition to the Minecraft Marketplace that brings a unique atmosphere to your game. Costing 660 Minecoins and taking up 16 megabytes of space, this pack aims to create a world inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft. I was very excited to dive into this review because it is the first time I have seen a pack use vibrant visual technology to create a monstor horror theme on Minecraft Bedrock

When I first loaded into the world, the most striking thing was the incredible use of height maps and PBR lighting. The pack uses these features to make mobs like the Cyclops chicken and the brain exposed pig look terrifyingly 3D, while blocks like the glow lichen and glow berries use pixel specific lighting to shine in the dark. I was especially impressed by the Iron Golem, which features a custom model with a metallic shine and realistic reflections that glisten in the sun.

However, even with these cool features, the pack is being held back by some frustrating limitations. The fog effect feels very cheap and makes visibility difficult, and I absolutely hated being forced to use a specific character skin instead of my own. There is also a lot of lag when moving through the world or looking at the water, which makes the gameplay feel very uncomfortable. Lastly, the design of a pink "cyclops" eye is reused in a few places and became a little bit boring by the end of the review. Because of these issues and some inconsistent textures on blocks like the mossy cobblestone, I am giving this a strong 7 out of 10.

Pros

  • Advanced PBR technology: The pack uses pixel specific lighting on items like glow berries and lichen to create a perfect vibrant visual experience.
  • Impressive height maps: Using height mapping on mobs like the cow and chicken adds a layer of 3D detail that makes them feel unsettling and alive.
  • Shiny reflective surfaces: Seeing the sun reflect off the metallic heads of the horses and the Iron Golem adds a high quality feel to the creatures.
  • Creative mob animations: The jittery movement of the horses and the slug like crawl of the sheep are very creative and fit the Eldritch horror theme perfectly.
  • Vibrant monster biomes: The unique colour motif of pinks and purples makes biomes like the cherry grove look like a beautiful and mysterious monster  world.

Cons

  • Cheap fog effects: The heavy pastel fog is way too strong and makes the world look lower quality than it actually is. Note: Comments on YouTube say other people really like this.
  • Forced character skins: It is very annoying to be forced to use a specific skin because it takes away your identity as a player.
  • Severe gameplay lag: Moving through the world and looking at the water causes heavy lag even on a high end console like the PS5 Pro.
  • Basic menu UI: Compared to the high tech visuals in the world, the main menu and settings screens are very basic and lack any fancy designs.
  • Overused design: The "Cyclops" eye design was reused in places, which took away some of the creativity ever so slightly.
