Daz Man Interviews CompyCraft!
Q1: Can you tell us a bit about your journey into Minecraft and how you became a Marketplace creator?
I (Compy, leader of CompyCraft) have always been passionate about natural history, wildlife, and dinosaurs. Many years ago, when I was only 14, I was playing Minecraft with my younger cousin. We couldn't find any dinosaur Add-Ons that he liked so I promised I would make one. I taught myself how to model, code, and every step of the process, and 2 years later the project was finally completed. Eventually becoming known as Paleocraft, it released on the Minecraft Marketplace in March 2021 and was a great success. Since then, Minecraft has become my job and I have a small team supporting my projects, most of whom started out as fans of my work and got into Minecraft development in a similar way to myself.
Q2: What inspired your latest creation on the Marketplace, and what was the creative process behind it?
WildlifeCraft (releasing May 5th 2026) is our biggest project yet. Considering my love for the natural world, it is quite overdue that we made a project about modern day animals! We have put a lot of passion into this project and hope everyone enjoys it.
Q3: Walk us through your typical workflow when developing a Marketplace map or content pack - from idea to finished product.
Firstly it is quite simple, we make projects that interest us. This usually means they are themed around dinosaurs and wildlife. Everyone gets to work, modelers and texturers first, and then animators and coders fall in behind, myself included. We are all passionate about our work and so we often have fun making the projects, even if the deadlines and need to keep up with social media promotions can sometimes stress us out. We add the finishing touches such as sound effects and guidebook last, and then submit for Marketplace review (which sometimes can take a very long time to complete!). We like to make YouTube videos in the mean time to build up to the final release. When the project is released, it isn't all over! We keep an eye on bugs and plan future updates.
Q4: What tools, software, or plugins do you rely on the most, and why?
Blockbench for modelling, a game changer since it was first released! VScode for coding. I prefer plain text to any fancy program that does it for you. In fact, when coding Paleocraft back in 2020 I relied on notepad to write it all! I much prefer using VS to that though, thanks to the colour and formatting making it easier to read.
Q5: What are the biggest challenges you face when creating for the Marketplace, and how do you overcome them?
Always learning new features! Especially in the early days when I had to learn it all from scratch and very few tutorials existed pack then as there were less people creating content for Bedrock - that only really expanded during the COVID pandemic!
Q6: How do you balance creativity with the limitations and guidelines of the Minecraft Marketplace?
The past few years have been massive for new features and the expansion of the Bedrock creator space, catching up and (dare I say) now eclipsing the Java space. In the years to come we feel this may slow down (although we hope not!) and we personally are carefully planning where we want to go next.
Q7: What’s next for you? Any upcoming releases, ideas, or collaborations we should watch out for?
WildlifeCraft is our biggest Add-On yet, releasing May 5th 2026. With over 200 new species of mobs, 50 new biomes, and many new trees and plants, it is a HUGE project that we started working on over a year ago.
Q8: Do you have any advice for aspiring Minecraft creators who want to get onto the Marketplace?
Make content you ENJOY, show it to social media, and try to publish content on the Marketplace through publishers such as Pathway studios. This is the best way of getting accepted - and even if you don't, at least you enjoyed yourself!
Q9: What are the biggest challenges you face when creating for the Marketplace, and how do you overcome them?
Everything is a complex process and takes a lot of time being developed and reviewed before releasing to the public. There can be a lot of back-and-forth before a project releases, and I expect this is the same with development of the main game. It's not as simple as modding online, and people aren't being lazy just because they take a long time to release something or only release a small amount of content at a time - this goes for both Marketplace creators and game devs in general!
A MASSIVE thank you to CompyCraft for allowing me this interview and a glimpse behind the scenes at how they and the Minecraft Marketplace works. Remember to check out their content at:
